June 16: Away we go.
La revedere, Cluj-Napoca. We’ll see you again. We will.

June 15: 9 to 5.
The goodbye party at Daddy’s work was not nearly as interesting (despite the beer cans with the bear on them!) as the water cooler, ping-pong balls, and strange glass doors that wouldn’t open without a badge-swipe.

June 14: Swingers.
A Romanian-Hungarian friend invited us over to her house to say goodbye today. Even though we had very few words in common, some things were easy to understand, despite our language differences: her puppy, two pet bunnies, fresh cucumbers, sliced bread, strawberry cake, shade from a cherry tree, and porch swings in the afternoon sunshine.

June 13: In the palm of your hand.
I spent the afternoon at a fellow expat and Indian native’s house enjoying cuisine from South India. She prepared it all, from a chicken stew to a lentil pudding to two kinds of chutney and a buttermilk aperitif. It was delicious! And it was a wonderful (but sad … tears were shed) way to wrap up my involvement with the international community of women here in Cluj.

June 7: Drop everything.
Nearly every afternoon here begins with a summer rain shower. And afterward, the air is cool and (mostly) sweet. I love it. I will miss it. I am not looking forward to going back to a place where the only thing rain does is turn the city into a sauna!

June 5: What a difference a year makes.
A year ago, we got off the plane in this strange, new place. Tonight, we watched a film (a really, really wonderful film!) at the Transylvania International Film Festival. Wow, where did those 365 days go?

May 31: Get on the bus.
These are Cluj’s bus tickets. We always have a few used ones floating around since my husband frequently takes the #35 to work. And the kiddos love to reuse them … as imaginary bus tickets or plane tickets or credit cards or party invitations or grocery lists or taxi receipts or …

May 26: Fenced in.
We’ve been away for two weeks, but it’s still spring here in Cluj. Things are still blooming. And we’re still wearing light jackets. I love it. And I am not at all ready to go back to our home in the States, where it’s hot, humid, and miserable already.

May 10: iCon.
Romanians have their iPods and iPads and iPhones. But they also have their icons, art that captures the saints so integral to their Orthodox faith. It’s an interesting mix, one that I haven’t quite figured out or come to understand. But I inexplicably appreciate the simplicity and symbolism of the thin, gold-edged, palm-sized cards.
