June 10: Bye-bye, bunnies.
In true Romanian style, we threw ourselves a going-away party on Sunday. Despite trying to give away many of our things, we were inundated with thoughtful, personal, touching gifts, from an ostrich egg to this book of Romanian photographs being inscribed by its giver. It was a wonderful, albeit bittersweet, party.

April 5: Flowers in her hair.
I watched these Romanian dancers perform at the grocery store for a while this afternoon while the kids burned some energy at the playground. (There is one grocery store in town that has installed a free playground mere steps from its front entrance. Show me that in an American city, and I will move there!) I love bright colors of the traditional Romanian costumes and my eyes kept coming back to this red flower.

March 1: Happy Spring!
Today is Mărţişor, the Romanian celebration of spring’s arrival. Never mind that it’s just above freezing and there are still piles of snow everywhere. We know how close the days of sunshine and thawing and tiny, sprouting green things are, and we’re going to celebrate! Everywhere around town, kiosks are set up selling mărţişoare, pins tied with red-and-white ribbons that symbolize leaving the cold, dark winter behind and embracing the warmth and joy of spring. The tradition goes that you give a mărţişoare to the women in your life to show your appreciation and respect for them. Women will wear them for the next two weeks to ensure the rest of the year is a prosperous and fertile one for their families. So, wherever you are today, Happy Spring from Romania! Here’s a mărţişoare just for you.

November 1: Day of the Dead.
It’s Ziua Mortilor, or Day of the Dead, in Romania. While yesterday was meaningful to us, today is meaningful to our Romanian friends. They are gathering this evening around the graves of their loved ones to remember them with candles and flowers. We had an invitation to go to the cemetery with some of our friends, but two sick kiddos up past their bedtime and me hobbling around a dark, rocky hill on crutches didn’t seem the wisest of moves. I had really been looking forward to seeing what Ziua Mortilor is all about, so my husband (my hero!) bundled up, grabbed the camera, and drove to Cimitirul Central to take some photos for me.

September 3: Are you ready for some football?
It’s game day in the States, and we’re lucky enough to be getting several match-ups on our Romanian ESPN channel. There’s something so comforting about hash marks, uprights, pigskin, and marching bands. It’s a little slice of home even though we’re so far from it. And? It means fall is close. Very, very close.
