June 8: Cherry happy.
It’s cherry season! (And we’re doing our best to eat a few bushels before we leave.)

June 7: Drop everything.
Nearly every afternoon here begins with a summer rain shower. And afterward, the air is cool and (mostly) sweet. I love it. I will miss it. I am not looking forward to going back to a place where the only thing rain does is turn the city into a sauna!

June 4: Somewhere over the rainbow.
Summer showers and the setting sun mean gorgeous rainbows over downtown Cluj.

September 21: What tangled webs we weave.
Since I’ve exhausted all the angles and subjects I can possibly snap pictures of from my spot on the living room couch, I decided to hobble out onto the porch and see if something photograph-worthy caught my eye. Needless to say, I hadn’t been out there in a while. I saw my one potted plant, droopy and brown-tinged but hanging in there. I saw our across-the-street neighbors gathered in their courtyard with their tiny, romping dogs. And I saw this little spider, his unassuming web hooked between the slats on the rail. A houseguest of sorts! And as long as he eats the mosquitoes, he is welcome to stay.

September 18: Toys on parade.
Today was a pretty typical Sunday. The kids drug out all the toys — Legos, blocks, trucks, stuffed animals, play-kitchen stuff, books — and set up various skyscrapers, princess balls, restaurants, and grocery stores in the living room, the hall, and the patio. They shared (mostly), gently included the baby (mostly), and acquiesced to the adults watching college football (mostly). Then, Daddy heroically offered to clean up the toys so the kiddos could head down to the park for a little while with Pawpaw. I was reminded that some things — toys, messes, fun, family, playgrounds — are the same no matter what country you’re in.

August 28: Yum.
They say there’s nothing quite like Italian gelato, and I have to say they’re right. When we got to Florence, we each had two luxurious scoops in a jumbo cone. The servings were so big we considered it our lunch. And the ice cream was so smooth and cool, we got a little reprieve from the 100-degree heat. I chose coffee and Nutella, and my husband chose strawberry and lemon. I close my eyes and can still taste the sweet, creamy goodness. Delizioso!

August 27: Music man.
We spotted this accordion player near Ponte Vecchio in Florence. Of all the street performers it’s possible to encounter in Europe, musicians are my favorite, perhaps because I understand the time and training it takes to master an instrument. I also loved this guy’s laid-back sense of style, with his outfit matching his accordion and his sleeves rolled up and ready for a long day at the office.

August 26: Upon reflection.
This is the Piazza della Signoria in Florence reflected in my husband’s sunglasses. On our only full day in the city before my crash, we walked around to all the major attractions. We listened to several self-guided audio tours. We had scoops of Nutella and coffee and strawberry and lemon gelato. We people-watched and took in the busyness. I snapped this shot as we hid from the heat and the crowds under the shade of the Loggia dei Lanzi. Little did we know, we were also unwittingly preparing for a vacation of a very different sort than the one we had planned.

{Thanks to Polly Nance for the inspiration for this shot.}

August 24: Something out of place.
The day before my accident, we visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the surrounding churches and theaters. This rusty yellow bike was locked up nonchalantly on the sidewalk, as if its owner parked it there every day while he worked at a souvenir stand or scooped gelato or something. The odd juxtaposition of the old bike and the seriously old building struck me as funny (and colorful).

August 7: More scenery from our weekend getaway.
Everything was just so gorgeous, with the rain and the fog and the sun and the green (occasionally all at the same time). The food was delicious, too, and the proprietors were so friendly, despite them not speaking a word of English and us knowing only a handful of Romanian words. We did learn a new one, though, and it might just be our new favorite: mămăligă. Yum!
