June 12: Cat calls.
Lollipop had her end-of-year show at preschool today. She and her 17 classmates dressed up like cats, recited poems, sang songs, and danced a blue streak to classics like “Rhythm Nation” and “So Long, Farewell.” And then they got diplomas and graduation caps to officially commemorate the end of preschool and the beginning of elementary school. Luckily, I was too busy fiddling with the camera settings to get teary-eyed.

June 11: Happy feet.
Giggles and his preschool colleagues had their end-of-year show today. Imagine 12 four-year-olds dressed like penguins … and the reality was a thousand times cuter than that!

June 6: Flags of our children.
Once we’re gone, I will really miss walking into the preschool and seeing all the flags that represent the nationalities of the children. Soon, it won’t be such a rarity to see the Red, White, and Blue. Also? I think I’ll miss the Red, Yellow, and Blue.

May 28: License to kill.
A lice outbreak at preschool means extra television while hair marinates for 45 minutes in preventative shampoo … and the extra television part is the only perk, as Lollipop will surely tell you!

April 12: Somebunny special.
I went into Lollipop’s class today to lead an Easter craft as part of her Child of the Week activities. We made rabbits from toilet paper rolls, wrapping paper, felt, buttons, and jewels. With cotton-ball tails, of course. (Thanks, Pinterest!) The kids had a good time — with glue and sparkly things, it was kind of a given — and I enjoyed myself, too. Plus, I got to leave just before the sugar rush kicked in from the souvenir chocolate bunnies I handed out. Sorry, Ms. Carmen!

March 23: Fine lines.
There is seriously not much cuter than dancing children. Am I right, or am I right?

March 15: Blast off!
My son was child of the week in his preschool class this week. We made a poster with some family photos, which he got to present to his classmates (or colleagues, as they call them here). He got to lead the line and be the teachers’ helper all week. And I got to visit his class and lead an activity for all the children. We watched a short Curious George cartoon (one of my son’s favorites, where George goes into space) and then made rocket collages with stickers, construction paper, crepe paper, and shiny shapes. Everyone had fun, including me, though I had to come home and take a nap because I was exhausted from taking charge of 13 4-year-olds for an hour and a half. Whew!

March 8: Happy Mother’s Day!
Today is International Women’s Day, though in Romania it is more a mix of Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. My daughter’s preschool class put together a mother-child talent show for the occasion (poems! dancing! magic! piano! a recorder performance!), and tomorrow, my son’s class will host all the mothers for a special surprise. After Mărţişor last week, I’m getting a little spoiled by all these holidays in my honor!

January 13: Looking up.
There are flags from every student’s country flying out front at the international school in our city. But, of course, the Romanian flag is most prominent, as it should be. As I waited for the kids and guestimated the size of the snow drifts, I wondered whose job it was to dust the fresh flakes from the flag each morning. Is there such a chore?

November 17: All in a day’s play.
This is a bulletin board at the international school my children attend here in Romania. If I hadn’t told you that, you’d think it was a typical American classroom, wouldn’t you? The bright bulletin-board border, the English sight words, the carefully colored pictures on the wall … Those are all things we love about the school. It’s just like home. And we also love that it’s nothing like home. The children come from a hodgepodge of countries, from Sweden and Belgium to India and Jordan. They eat the traditional Romanian soup and second course for lunch. They learn dances, songs, and poems from all over the world. It’s, quite literally, all in a day’s play.
