June 14: Swingers.
A Romanian-Hungarian friend invited us over to her house to say goodbye today. Even though we had very few words in common, some things were easy to understand, despite our language differences: her puppy, two pet bunnies, fresh cucumbers, sliced bread, strawberry cake, shade from a cherry tree, and porch swings in the afternoon sunshine.

March 6: Pulp Nonfiction.
I couldn’t help but expect John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson to hop out of this van and offer me french fries with mayonnaise. Or at least shoot a few bullets at the coordinating license plate.

January 28: Haide, U!
I went to my first Romanian basketball game last night to cheer on U Mobitelco, the hometown boys. The house was packed, the cheers were infectious, and the flags were waving. Our team lost, but there’s always next time. Haide, U!

January 25: Old man winter.
This is the man who takes care of our apartment building. One of his jobs (besides entertaining the kids with Romanian jokes they don’t understand but still find hilarious) is to clear the snow from the sidewalks and driveway. And yesterday, he got quite a workout. It literally snowed All. Day. Long. Cars were covered, the parking lot was a white, wintery mess, and the flakes just kept on coming. I snapped this shot before I went to get the kids at school, around 5 p.m. He looked at me just before I took it and said, “Zăpadă, nu mai mult.” Snow, no more. Mother Nature didn’t listen, though.

January 24: Sign language.
This is the entrance to one of the malls in our Romanian city. It’s got two words on it, and no matter where you’re from or what language you speak, I bet you know one of those words. Oh, the power of marketing! (Incidentally, the other word, intrare, means “entrance” in Romanian.)

November 22: Stuck on you.
Our Christmas cards are in the mail! Let’s hope they arrive in the States before Christmas. And let’s hope the Romanian postal system introduces self-adhesive stamps before the next time I do a large mailing. I think I can still taste the icky stamp glue. But it’s all part of the expat experience, right?

November 17: All in a day’s play.
This is a bulletin board at the international school my children attend here in Romania. If I hadn’t told you that, you’d think it was a typical American classroom, wouldn’t you? The bright bulletin-board border, the English sight words, the carefully colored pictures on the wall … Those are all things we love about the school. It’s just like home. And we also love that it’s nothing like home. The children come from a hodgepodge of countries, from Sweden and Belgium to India and Jordan. They eat the traditional Romanian soup and second course for lunch. They learn dances, songs, and poems from all over the world. It’s, quite literally, all in a day’s play.

October 29: The hills are aliiiiiiiiiiiiive.
The Halloween festivities have officially begun. Today, we went to a friend’s gorgeous house with gorgeous views of Pădurea Făget for an international Halloween party. I heard kids and parents speaking English, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, and Romanian, but everyone understood costumes, candy, and “Thriller”!

October 20: The great wide open.
Believe it or not, I took this photo just about an hour outside of our large Romanian city. The clouds, the sky, the fields, everything is so … vast. The tiny but palpable sense of fear I got when driving on this road in the middle of this open country with no one but a shepherd and his flock in sight is exactly how I feel today. My parents left this morning to fly back to the States. Our Romanian nanny started at 8 a.m., and she’ll be coming every weekday until I can walk again. Can I tell her what I need? Will we forge a friendship? Will she care for my baby the way I would? The questions seem so, well, so … vast.
