June 14: Swingers.
A Romanian-Hungarian friend invited us over to her house to say goodbye today. Even though we had very few words in common, some things were easy to understand, despite our language differences: her puppy, two pet bunnies, fresh cucumbers, sliced bread, strawberry cake, shade from a cherry tree, and porch swings in the afternoon sunshine.

June 13: In the palm of your hand.
I spent the afternoon at a fellow expat and Indian native’s house enjoying cuisine from South India. She prepared it all, from a chicken stew to a lentil pudding to two kinds of chutney and a buttermilk aperitif. It was delicious! And it was a wonderful (but sad … tears were shed) way to wrap up my involvement with the international community of women here in Cluj.

June 10: Bye-bye, bunnies.
In true Romanian style, we threw ourselves a going-away party on Sunday. Despite trying to give away many of our things, we were inundated with thoughtful, personal, touching gifts, from an ostrich egg to this book of Romanian photographs being inscribed by its giver. It was a wonderful, albeit bittersweet, party.

April 18: Those curls.
He’ll be two in less than a month. And those curls still stop my heart. (In this picture, he’s hunting for an egg at the Easter party we went to today at a friend’s house in the Făget Forest.)

April 16: Stomping grounds.
There’s nothing like splashing through some rapidly drying puddles after an evening of bratwurst and Legos with friends!

April 15: Easter, the sequel.
Today was Orthodox Easter in Romania — the day most Romanians celebrate. A friend invited us over for a traditional meal of vişinată, ciorba de perişoare, sarmale, slanina, and homemade wine and chocolate cake. She also had a basket full of eggs dyed in the traditional way — with leaves and petals that make designs when the eggs are colored with red and yellow onion peels. The kids loved the eggs and cleared out at least half of her basket. Paşte Fericit to all (again)!

February 14: A taste of love.
On the meniu for Valentine’s Day? Love, friendship, and some really good zacuscă. We joined several expat couples at a fancy Italian restaurant (think: crystal chandeliers, coat check, and a piano man who played lots of Richard Marx). It was a wonderful evening … and not just because the ladies got complimentary chocolate after the meal!

January 21: Rebooting.
Giggles has new boots! These lovelies are from our nanny, who brought each of us a present when we saw her last week. He loves them and proudly wore them to school today to show to his classmates and teachers. And I love the bright color and durability. (Quality is often lacking in Romanian goods, we’ve noticed. Asta e.) But these? Perfect for my rompin’, racin’ exclamation mark.

December 16: Fire away.
This is a Christmas votive that a fellow expat gave me. It was just a little gift, a small token of new friendship, but it really touched me. I love that I will unpack this from our Christmas boxes year after year and always think of her and of our time in Romania.

December 14: The big 0-4.
We celebrated my son’s fourth birthday party tonight at a pirate-ship playland at one of the malls in our Romanian city. Pizza, cake, games, neon lights, a ball pit, a party mascot, cowboy costumes, face painting … and three staff members to supervise all the kids, leaving the parents with time to enjoy a beverage and some good conversation. Everyone had a fun time!
