June 7: Drop everything.
Nearly every afternoon here begins with a summer rain shower. And afterward, the air is cool and (mostly) sweet. I love it. I will miss it. I am not looking forward to going back to a place where the only thing rain does is turn the city into a sauna!

June 6: Flags of our children.
Once we’re gone, I will really miss walking into the preschool and seeing all the flags that represent the nationalities of the children. Soon, it won’t be such a rarity to see the Red, White, and Blue. Also? I think I’ll miss the Red, Yellow, and Blue.

May 25: Heavy metal.
Here’s what I envision my knee and my son’s elbow look like inside. Our bone repairs are probably a little more delicate- and precise-looking, right? Right??

May 10: iCon.
Romanians have their iPods and iPads and iPhones. But they also have their icons, art that captures the saints so integral to their Orthodox faith. It’s an interesting mix, one that I haven’t quite figured out or come to understand. But I inexplicably appreciate the simplicity and symbolism of the thin, gold-edged, palm-sized cards.

May 8: Bench pressed.
Yellow flowers. Blue bench. Green, green trees. All spotted out of the corner of my eye through the slats of a fence. There is color everywhere in this country. I love it.

April 23: All roads lead to …
… this amazingly confusing intersection in our neighborhood where the people turning left actually have the priority. A two-way street recently turned one-way only adds to the complications. When I drive through on the way to preschool every morning, focusing on the traffic wakes me up better than any cup of coffee!

April 19:  Dyeing to try it …
Since the kiddos are out of school this week on Easter break, we decided to dye some eggs today. (Better late than never.) Can you believe this was their first time to try it? As much as I loved it as a kid, I can’t believe I’ve waited so long to introduce them to the magic that is simultaneously dyeing your egg and fingers … which is exactly what we did. Thanks to some PAAS boxes from a friend in the States, we made a dozen colorful glitter eggs. Then we tried our hand at the traditional onion-dyed Romanian method, which turned out to be a lot harder than it looks. Ours weren’t nearly as nice as our friend Laura’s, but we gave it a go. My hope is that we’ll continue to do both kinds of egg-decorating for Easters to come.

April 12: Somebunny special.
I went into Lollipop’s class today to lead an Easter craft as part of her Child of the Week activities. We made rabbits from toilet paper rolls, wrapping paper, felt, buttons, and jewels. With cotton-ball tails, of course. (Thanks, Pinterest!) The kids had a good time — with glue and sparkly things, it was kind of a given — and I enjoyed myself, too. Plus, I got to leave just before the sugar rush kicked in from the souvenir chocolate bunnies I handed out. Sorry, Ms. Carmen!

April 11: Freeze frame.
I scraped ice off the windshield this morning. Spring, oh, spring, where have you gone?
