July 30: At the gas station. I love the story this photo tells. First, you can see that the gas is dispensed in liters and added up in Romanian lei. Second, you can see our Opel Zafira in the background (and me snapping the photo). Third, you can see my husband at the far left. He’s headed in to pay because there’s no such thing as pay-at-the-pump here. (He’s also going to pay our cable bill, which the gas station handles for you.) And last, this is one of the few shots I was able to get because the attendant (gas is still full-serve here, if you want it, and it’s a convenience offered for free) came over and yelled at me for taking pictures. He did seem to understand when I looked sheepish and tried out my new Romanian phrase, “Îmi pare rău” — I’m sorry!

  1. I love how many layers of interest this photo has. You have outdone yourself with this one and I think it may be one of my favorites of yours. It has such a nice journalistic feel to it.

  2. I often look for the reflection in the pictures.
I’m glad your sheepish sorry did the trick and you got away with your picture. I recently got asked to delete my photos when I was taking pictures of crowds going up and down an escalator. Apparently there was a photograpy ban in the whole of the shopping centre. :-S
