July 26: The recycling container for cardboard at the preschool. Romania just recently initiated country-wide recycling. Blue for cardboard, yellow for plastic and metal, and green for glass. There are huge containers like these across the city, though it will take a while before using them becomes a habit. It’s not unusual at all to see parks and sidewalks littered with trash — being conscious of the environment is just not something Romanians have had the gumption, logistical skills, or funding to do. It’s rewarding to be here right now, as things start to change, and to be part of these small steps.

  1. Recycling bins are part of our city electric and water service, so we are very used to recycling. It has been a long process even here though, to get everyone to use them!
