April 24: You’ve got mail?
Winter got the best of this poor fence, but the mailman still cometh!

March 5: Return to sender.
I took some packages to the post office today and got a lecture from the woman behind the counter. In Romanian. I didn’t understand the words, but her tone clearly conveyed disapproval with my selection of packing materials. What I really need is a stack of photo mailers. Or envelopes lined in bubble wrap. Or, hey, a post office that sells those supplies. Alas, I’m stuck with my flimsy paper envelopes from the grocery store and the silent prayer I say as I send them on their 6,000-mile journey.

January 8: Something to write home about.
Our mailbox is empty, but it sure is pretty topped with snow, don’t you think?

November 22: Stuck on you.
Our Christmas cards are in the mail! Let’s hope they arrive in the States before Christmas. And let’s hope the Romanian postal system introduces self-adhesive stamps before the next time I do a large mailing. I think I can still taste the icky stamp glue. But it’s all part of the expat experience, right?

November 21: Is it spring yet?
More. Cold. Weather. Brrrr. At least my mom is mailing me a new fluffy red scarf!

November 3: Mmmmmmmmmmmmm.
One of the perks of breaking your leg in a foreign country (hey, I’m looking on the bright side) is care package love from friends back in the States. We got four boxes this week. Four! Full of graham crackers, brownie mix, tortilla chips, cilantro, everything Reese’s, Halloween stickers, foam crafts (foam crafts!), lollipops, and my favorite, favorite, favorite: M&Ms. The plain kind. The peanut kind. The peanut butter kind. Bags and bags. Now, Romania has M&Ms, but they taste … different. Not worth the calories, in my opinion. I’m so grateful for friends who indulge my finicky taste buds and send me good old American M&Ms across the Atlantic.

July 29: Cheeto fingers. There is just no equivalent to Cheetos in Romania (do you hear that, Frito-Lay??), so a good friend sent us a care package that included a big bag of them. We have been trying to ration the portions, but there’s nothing like that cheesy, crunchy goodness and the dusty orange fingers it leaves behind.

July 13: Mail call! Our first package from home arrived today. Well, not exactly. I drove to the post office to pick it up, got lost, found it, was redirected to another post office, sweated buckets, asked 7 random strangers where I was going in my broken Romanian, stood in one line until told to wait in another line, sweated more buckets, watched the customs people open my box and examine the contents, held the fussy baby the whole time, and sweated more buckets. But now we have syrup! And black beans! And a fly swatter! Hooray!

June 10: Our first full rainy day. It’s chilly, too. The brightest colors today our are mailboxes and the neighbor’s bright yellow porch … and the stacks of papers we’ve painted at the kitchen table listening to the rain fall on the window ledges.
