June 13: In the palm of your hand.
I spent the afternoon at a fellow expat and Indian native’s house enjoying cuisine from South India. She prepared it all, from a chicken stew to a lentil pudding to two kinds of chutney and a buttermilk aperitif. It was delicious! And it was a wonderful (but sad … tears were shed) way to wrap up my involvement with the international community of women here in Cluj.

June 2: Bottled up.
Teeny-tiny bottles of Coca-Cola. With not-so-teeny-tiny prices. As it goes in Europe (unless you’re ordering beer). Should I admit that I’ll be glad to get back to the land of extra-jumbo-grande-soda-for-a-buck-please-thanks??

April 16: Stomping grounds.
There’s nothing like splashing through some rapidly drying puddles after an evening of bratwurst and Legos with friends!

April 15: Easter, the sequel.
Today was Orthodox Easter in Romania — the day most Romanians celebrate. A friend invited us over for a traditional meal of vişinată, ciorba de perişoare, sarmale, slanina, and homemade wine and chocolate cake. She also had a basket full of eggs dyed in the traditional way — with leaves and petals that make designs when the eggs are colored with red and yellow onion peels. The kids loved the eggs and cleared out at least half of her basket. Paşte Fericit to all (again)!

April 10: Line drive.
This is how most Romanians wait in line … a little to the left, a little to the right, all looking for the perfect moment to make their move up to the front. But the sarmale, mici, and other grilled goodies this crowd is waiting for? I’d cut in line, too.

March 26: Bargain hunters.
Lollipop and Giggles peruse the fruit selection at a petit marché near our Paris apartment. Bon appetit!

February 14: A taste of love.
On the meniu for Valentine’s Day? Love, friendship, and some really good zacuscă. We joined several expat couples at a fancy Italian restaurant (think: crystal chandeliers, coat check, and a piano man who played lots of Richard Marx). It was a wonderful evening … and not just because the ladies got complimentary chocolate after the meal!

February 13: Scooped.
Ice cream in winter? Absolutely! Just make sure your scarf matches your flavor of choice.

February 2: Reason #143 I love Europe.
Generic Nutella. It costs less, and it tastes great. Also, it’s almost always offered at hotel breakfast buffets. Spread on a fresh croissant? Yes, please!

January 16: Nutella me about it …
Want to know a secret? Sometimes, during the week, when the older kids are at school and it’s just the baby and me in the apartment, we share a Nutella sandwich for lunch. And every time? We enjoy it this much.
