The moment we moved into our Romanian apartment, my daughter designated the spacious bathroom with the skylight and tub as the girls’ room The smaller bathroom? With a shower, a washing machine, and a perpetually wet floor? For boys. And recently, she made her adorably dictatorial decree official with this hand-lettered and illustrated sign.

February 15: Break a leg.
I slipped on the ice yesterday and twisted my once-broken knee. (Drat this winter!) Today, I went for an X-ray, just to be safe. And now I have a doctor’s report and two lovely new images of the five screws in my leg. What do they mean? I have no idea! But at least I got this neat shot of the tree covered in snow and the imaging place’s logo. It’s sort of cause and effect, no?

February 14: A taste of love.
On the meniu for Valentine’s Day? Love, friendship, and some really good zacuscă. We joined several expat couples at a fancy Italian restaurant (think: crystal chandeliers, coat check, and a piano man who played lots of Richard Marx). It was a wonderful evening … and not just because the ladies got complimentary chocolate after the meal!
